Car Insurance Options Explained
In general there are three types of car insurance cover: Third party, Third party fire and theft & Comprehensive.
Third Party Insurance
To drive a car legally in Ireland third party insurance is the minimum cover required. With this type of cover your insurance company will pay damages for the injury you cause to another person. They will also pay for damage you did to their vehicle. This is usually the cheapest cover available however bear in mind that this type of policy does not usually cover you if your car gets stolen or for the damage you do to your own vehicle in an accident.
Third Party Fire and Theft
With this policy in addition to providing you with third party cover (explained above) your vehicle is also covered against fire and theft.
Comprehensive
This is usually the most expensive type of insurance. In addition to third party, fire and theft it also covers you for loss of or damage to your vehicle.
When sourcing insurance quotes it is worth asking...
1) Does the policy have an extension, which allows you to drive other cars?
2) What is the monetary excess offered on the motor insurance policy?
3) Does the motor insurance policy offer a no claim bonus protection or a no claim bonus protection step back? (This is very beneficial in the event of a claim)
5) Does the policy offer motor assistance of breakdown assist?
6) Does the policy offer windscreen cover? And if you make a claim on your windscreen will this affect your no claims bonus?
