Securing Your Car

Immobiliser

An engine immobiliser is probably your best option as it disables at least two of the three systems needed to get the vehicle going (fuel system, ignition and starter motor). Many immobilisers now incorporate an electronically keypad which is much more secure than using a key to start the car. These days most new cars have an immobiliser fitted however if you have an older car you can usually get one installed for around 350 euro

Steering lock

While a steering lock can be broken they at least act as a deterrent and the thief may choose an easier target to steal. Pick one made from hardened steel, or alternatively a big chain and lock will probably be just as effective in deterring thieves.

Etching

In many countries it is quite common practice to have your registration number etched onto all windows and headlamps.

Parking

When parking outside always try and use an attended car park, if there isn't one handy and your having to leave your car out over night try and find a well-lit open place with your wheels turned into the curb. Lock your car inside a garage if you have one. Remember you may also find your insurance premium reduced if your able to do this.

Lock the door!

Yes, it sounds obvious, but quite a frightening percentage of cars stolen each year are unlocked. This is particularly important if you are pulled up at a service station or convenience store. Also don't forget to roll up the windows completely.

Theft from cars

Don't leave anything that looks like it might be worth stealing in the car. Remember with this type of kind of crime the perpetrators are often young teens and a broken window/door is high price to pay for leaving some change in the car. CDs/DVD's should be stored out of sight.

Get a stereo system with a PIN number code this will render it useless if stolen and remember thieves are also drawn to specialised seats and steering wheels. If your car has allows these can be protected with locking wheel nuts.

When driving in traffic do not leave valuables such as handbags and wallets on the passenger seat, some car alarm systems now incorporate a "panic" button on the key tag which may help see off an attacker.
