Tips to help reduce your insurance
Know your car's worth
Do not insure your car for more than its worth, in the event of a write-off your insurance company will only pay out on the listed value of the car. To help get an idea of your car's worth check the prices of similar cars on CarsIreland.ie and other websites.
Lower engine capacity means lower premium
In general the lower the engine capacity of a car the lower the insurance premium. This is particularly true in the case of young drivers who find their premiums significantly lowered if they opt for a low engine capacity vehicle.
Alarms & immobiliser
Some insurers offer a discount for having an approved alarm or immobiliser system. It is strongly recommended to have this fitted by a suitable qualified technician.
Parking
Many insurers offer a discount for vehicles, which are stored in a garage at night.
Open driving
If you have open driving on your car you should find that by restricting the cover to named drivers over 25 years of age & holding a full licence your premium will go down.
Driving
If you have a provisional licence you should find that your premium will be reduced once you pass your test. Also bare in mind that some insurers apply discounts for the successful completion of advanced motoring courses.
Older cars
If you car is old (not classic) or not worth much consider insuring for third party fire and theft only
Breakdown service
Some policies include break down service. If you have a new car you may be paying for something you don’t need as many new cars come with 12 months break down service.
