I DON’T like putting the ‘boot’ into many new cars as there really isn’t a bad one. Some are built on price alone, so quality isn’t their big selling point.
And with safety and emissions regulations getting more stringent, cars are much better built and cheaper to run.
Now I may be estating the obvious when I tell you what my favourite car is and, in this case only, I will put the ‘boot’ into every one of its rivals, because the Skoda Superb Combi is pound-for-pound the king of the road.
Motormouths have a long-term love for Skoda, especially the flagship Superb model.
The new versions have been restyled to give a sharper look with a much more upmarket interior.
The original saloon was a little challenging to look at from behind; it had more to do with the clever twin boot opening, but for us it didn’t suit the look.
We have always likes the Combi version of the Superb and this latest model is simply boot-iful.
It has a more edgy design with sharp lines, giving it a more sporty look.
My test car was the Sportline model which came with 18-inch alloys, tinted windows and a subtle body kit.
I love load-lugging estates, not just for their practicality, but I think in many cases they are better looking than their saloon siblings.
The sharp styling continues on the inside and the interior feels like it should be in a €70k car.
The new dash includes a bigger touchscreen infotainment system, that works with Apple Carplay, and the ambient lighting, of which you can choose three colours, illuminates the cabin, giving it a high-end feel.
Space is in abundance in the Superb Combi.
You get 660 litres of luggage space with the seats in place and, when folded, you get 1,950 litres, which is enough for you to rent it out on AirbnB.
All passengers are treated to a high level of comfort and space. Rear-seat passengers have enough head and legroom to make them feel smaller than they really are.
I felt the Superb would look nice with a vRS bade on the boot, but the Sportline will suffice until such time that the Czech car maker decides to go all in on a hot Superb.
My test car had the potent 2.0TDi with 190bhp. While the engine could sound a little more refined at times, it still has plenty of performance, with 400Nm of torque making it rapid through the gears.
Taking of gears, the DSG is the only way to go in a car like this.
It’s super-slick and smooth at the same time. It’s nice to have the extra power in this version of the 2.0 diesel.
The Combi is a big heavy car, but if the budget doesn’t allow it, the normal 148bhp version is more than capable. It’s really economical as well, with a weekly average around 6.7l/100kms.
The Superb range starts from €28,750, which puts it among some well-specced hatches. This is a lot of car for the money, but for all the bells and whistles you’ll be looking at the €45k mark.
It seems high, but if you think a BMW 3 -Series with a few options is the same price, you’ll realise the €45k on a fully-loaded Superb Combi is money well spent.
