End of an era - Skoda Octavia RS Diesel to cease production

Overview

Škoda Ireland has announced that production of the beloved Octavia RS TDI diesel model will come to an end in early 2024. The badge has a rich history, with its RS (Rally Sport) designation dating back to 1974 when the 180 RS and 200 RS rally prototypes were developed. The 130 RS solidified the RS models' legendary status with wins at prominent rallies in 1979 and the European Touring Car Championship in 1981.

In 2000, Škoda reintroduced the RS name with the Octavia RS, coinciding with the brand's entry into the World Rally Championship (WRC). The second-generation Octavia RS, introduced in 2007, featured a diesel powertrain for the first time, the 2.0 TDI with 170bhp, garnering instant success.

The third-generation Octavia RS, launched in 2013, offered increased power (184bhp) and the option of a 4x4 transmission, further strengthening the brand's presence in Ireland.

The fourth-generation Octavia RS introduced plug-in-hybrid technology and a new 2.0 TDI diesel engine with 200bhp, boasting impressive fuel economy, speed, and acceleration figures.

Unfortunately, the current fourth-generation diesel Octavia RS will mark the end of high-performance Škoda models bearing the RS badge due to evolving trends in electrification and emissions legislation. Priced from €47,845, production of the Octavia RS diesel will cease in early 2024, with no plans for a successor. Škoda expects loyal customers to consider the Octavia 2.0, 245bhp TSI RS petrol variant or the larger Superb Sportline model as alternatives.

Ray Leddy, Head of Product and Marketing at Škoda Ireland said ‘The Octavia RS diesel, in Hatchback or Combi has brought joy to many motorists. Few cars can match its common sense practicality and driving enjoyment. Early in 2024 after 16 years of production, the very last Octavia RS diesel will roll off the production line. To mark this occasion we are launching a special run out colour, unique to Ireland called Cosmic Green. For anybody who has considered owning a diesel Octavia RS, the window is closing fast. Production is limited so I would urge interested parties to contact their local Škoda dealer to secure one of the last of the fast diesels’
