The first electric car from Mercedes will debut in Ireland later this summer with a starting price around the €90,000 mark.

Mercedes is not disclosing prices until nearer the official launch date but that's what I expect the EQC mid-size crossover/SUV to cost (before VRT rebate and SEAI grant).

There will be a specific preview model in the country in July but sales/deliveries start officially from October.

By then the initial EQC 400 4MATIC model - there's no official price yet - will be in dealer showrooms.

But we'll get a foretaste of the car in mid-to-late July when that preview EQC Edition 1886 arrives. It recalls the year in which Karl Benz invented his famed Benz Patent Motorwagen and is suitably adorned.

The EQC is based on the latest GLC model and starts the automotive giant's drive towards bringing several more electric vehicles (EVs) to the forecourts over the next few years.

Just to give you an idea of the scale of production planned, there will be a smaller electric vehicle, the EQA, next year followed by eight more models by 2022.

For now, however, the real focus is on the EQC (think of it as a cross between a SUV and large coupé). Rival EVs include the likes of the Jaguar i-Pace, Audi e-tron, BMW iX3 and Tesla Model X.

Mercedes is claiming it can cover more than 450km on one charge, while power consumption is a claimed 22.2 kWh/100km.

With an electric motor for each axle (delivering a combined output of 402hp and 765Nm torque), the EQC benefits from All-Wheel-Drive (AWD).
