Overview
VOLKSWAGEN’S supermini has been given a new look.
The sixth-generation Polo is very pleasing on the eye – and from a distance gives the impression of a mini Golf.
The all-new design is larger than before and the Polo will benefit from a lot of the updated Golf’s infotainment and safety tech.
Volkswagen are offering a lot of customisation options for its new Polo, giving the little supermini a lot of personality. There is 14 colours and 12 alloy wheel options.
Volkswagen have increased the size of the new Polo (although it’s 7mm lower) meaning all occupants enjoy more space.
As well as the interior space increase, the boot space has been enlarged to 351 litres from 280 litres, making it a much more family-friendly luggage space.
The engine line-up includes a 1.0-litre MPI petrol with 65 or 75bhp, a turbocharged TSI petrol unit with 95 and 115bhp and, rounding off the petrol line-up will be a new 1.5-litre TSI petrol engine from the Golf, producing 150bhp and using cylinder deactivation technology to reduce fuel consumption and emissions.
On the diesel front, there will be a 1.6-litre TDI diesel with 80 and 90bhp.
Entry-level engines come with a five-speed manual, while the more powerful models get a six-speed box.
For Polos with 95hp or more, you can opt for a seven-speed DSG auto.
The best news of all, though, is that addition of a GTi to the Polo family. Motormouths love the little pocket rockets and we’re glad to see it get reinvented in the latest form.
It will be powered by a 2.0-litre TSI petrol engine with 200hpand sits on 17-inch alloys with the option to upgrade to 18-inch alloys.
LED headlights with red highlights will also be on the options list, as will Sport Select, a new adjustable damping chassis system.
The Polo GTI hits Ireland in March 2018.
The new Polo will get to showrooms in Ireland by November this year after it makes an appearance at the Frankfurt Motor Show.
Volkswagen hope to get sales rolling in time for the ‘181’ plate in January 2018.
