BMW’s new 2-series Gran Coupe will cost from €34,010 when it gets here from March next.
Its debut completes both the 2-series line-up and 4dr coupe range.
This new model is front-wheel-driven but has AWD architecture.
Petrol-head interest will focus on the M235i xDrive M Performance model. The 2-litre in this is BMW’s most powerful 4cyl (306hp, 450Nm, 0-100kmh in 4.9 seconds).
It looks low and sleek, being just 1,420mm tall but 4,526mm long, 1,800mm wide and with a 2,670mm wheelbase. The 430-litre (up 40 litres on the 2dr coupe) can be extended by various combinations of seat manipulation.
Standard are full-LED head and rear lights.
A revised 1.5-litre 3cyl petrol will power the entry level 218i (emissions down 29g/km over the previous engine; power up 4bhp to 140hp).
The diesel is the 2-litre 4cyl 220d (190hp, 400Nm).
Entry level Sport will have 17ins alloys while M-Sport and M235i xDrive M Performance models will run on 18ins alloys – 19ins rims are optional for the latter two.
Rear knee-room and cargo area benefit from the extra space bestowed by it being front-wheel-drive. The company claims passengers get 33mm of extra knee room.
The seating position is 12mm higher and there is 14mm more headroom even with the optional sunroof.
Standard on Sport are the 17ins wheels, Park Distance Control front and rear, 2-zone auto air-con, Connected Package Plus.
M Sport adds the 18ins alloys, M Sport suspension, special bodystyling, digital cockpit professional, ‘personal assistant’.
On the M235i xDrive there are grey 18ins alloys, M235i M Sport suspension, rear spoiler, M Performance exhaust system, limited slip differential on the front axle and 8spd sport automatic transmission with launch control.
