We get behind the wheel of the brand-new Kia EV4 to see if it’s the electric hatchback buyers have been waiting for
The Kia EV4 is Kia’s latest fully electric model and effectively replaces the traditional family hatchback for the EV era. Sitting in what was once the Golf and Focus segment, now occupied by cars like the Volkswagen ID.3 and Renault Megane E-Tech - the EV4 is aimed squarely at buyers who don’t want a large SUV but still need space, range and everyday usability.
With strong real-world range figures, keen pricing and Kia’s trademark long warranty, the EV4 makes a very strong case for itself. For drivers making the switch to electric, or those looking to downsize from an SUV, this could be one of the most compelling options on the market.
Despite its hatchback proportions, the Kia EV4 impresses when it comes to practicality. Boot space measures a generous 435 litres, which comfortably beats many rivals in this segment, including the VW ID.3. The boot itself is well finished, with a flat loading area and an electric tailgate adding everyday convenience.
Rear-seat space is another strong point. Knee-room is particularly impressive, even for taller passengers, and the flat electric floor makes the centre seat far more usable than in traditional petrol or diesel hatchbacks. USB charging ports are provided for rear passengers, and families will appreciate the wide rear bench and easily accessible ISOFIX mounting points.
Up front, the EV4 feels airy and well laid out, with plenty of storage throughout the cabin, making it well suited to daily commuting or longer journeys.
Kia has pitched the EV4 as a well-equipped car across the range. Entry-level models already come with a comprehensive tech offering, while higher trims add desirable upgrades. The popular GT-Line specification brings features such as larger 19-inch alloy wheels, sportier styling details and upgraded interior finishes.
The cabin is dominated by a large digital display housing most of the car’s key functions, including navigation, battery information and infotainment. Thankfully, climate controls remain separate, keeping day-to-day usability straightforward. Kia’s infotainment system is quick, responsive and intuitive, while Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard.
Safety equipment is also impressively well judged. The EV4 includes a full suite of driver assistance systems such as blind-spot monitoring and speed limit warnings, but they’re tuned to be helpful rather than intrusive - a welcome balance that makes the car more relaxing to drive.
The Kia EV4 is available with two battery options. The 58.3kWh Standard Range model offers a claimed range of up to 440km, while the 81.4kWh Long Range version stretches that to an impressive 625km in Earth trim - currently the longest range of any electric Kia.
On the road, the EV4 benefits hugely from not being an SUV. Sitting lower to the ground gives it a more planted, agile feel, particularly through corners and around town. While it’s not as outright quick as the larger EV6, acceleration is brisk, especially off the line, making it feel lively and responsive in everyday driving.
Efficiency is another highlight. Real-world consumption figures of around 15kWh/100km mean the displayed range is largely achievable, even in colder conditions. Motorway driving will naturally reduce range slightly, but overall the EV4 proves to be a reliable and efficient long-distance EV.
One of the EV4’s biggest selling points is Kia’s outstanding warranty package. Buyers benefit from a 7-year manufacturer warranty, providing peace of mind that few rivals can match. Combined with competitive pricing, strong efficiency and excellent range, the EV4 is well positioned to hold its value in the long term.
For buyers seeking a stylish, practical and affordable electric hatchback - without stepping into SUV territory - the Kia EV4 stands out as one of the most convincing options currently available.
