55 tonnes of plastic reclaimed from the ocean to be used in future Kia EVs

Overview

Kia Ocean Clean UpThe Ocean Clean Up, a global partner of Kia has set a new record for the amount of plastic reclaimed from the worlds oceans. A 55 tonne haul was salvaged from ‘the Great Pacific Garbage Patch’, the largest collection of floating rubbish in the world, located in the North Pacific. The mammoth pile of plastic was delivered to Victoria, Vancouver Island, Canada where it will be recycled and a portion sent to be used in the manufacture of future Kia vehicles. 34kg of the upcoming EV9 SUV will be made from recycled plastic and bio-based, eco-friendly materials.

The mission is the latest in a range of efforts KIA have made to become a leader in sustainability in the motor industry. The brand has also committed to more than 20% increase in plastic reuse by 2030 and achievement of carbon neutrality by 2045.
