Five used 7-seaters that nail the school run

(and there's not an SUV in sight)

Overview

You might think an SUV is the obvious choice when you need seven seats, but a good MPV can often give you more space, more flexibility and better family-friendly features for less money. They might not have the SUV image, but in this climate, value for money and practicality wins. With that in mind, here are five unfashionably brilliant cars that make the school run MUCH easier.

1. Volkswagen Touran

Volkswagen Touran 7 Seater
The sensible all-rounder that’s still a bit cool.

•    7 seats
•    Compact enough for town
•    Huge, practical cabin

School-run win: Easy to drive, easy to park, loads of room for kids and bags. Want to keep a little street cred? Hunt down an R-Line Touran - sharper bumpers, bigger alloys and sportier styling make this seven-seat school-run hero surprisingly sleek. Practical doesn’t have to mean boring.

2. Seat Alhambra

The school-run bus - in a good way.

•    Proper 7-seater
•    MASSIVE inside
•    Sliding rear doors

School-run win: The party piece here is without a doubt those sliding doors.  Unbelievably handy in tight parking spaces, especially with kids - no more holding your breath as they fling a door open beside someone’s pride and joy. Ding anxiety: gone.

3. Citroën Grand C4 Picasso

 Made for family life.

•    7 individual seats
•    3 ISOFIX positions across row two
•    Bright, airy cabin

School-run win: Three child seats across the middle without automatically sacrificing the third row.

4. Renault Grand Scénic

Renault Grand Scenic
 The clever one.

•    7 seats
•    Stylish and compact design
•    Tonnes of tech on board

School-run win: A people carrier with 20 inch rims? Yes please. Renault nailed the brief with this one. This was peak MPV before the SUV took over and in our opinion, still a much better buy than its slightly higher off the ground counterparts.

5. Ford S-Max

Ford S-Max
The 7-seater that looks like an SUV.

•    7 seats
•    3 individual middle-row seats
•    3 ISOFIX positions across row two

Ford S-Max is another great shout. It has 7 seats, drives much more like a regular car than a people carrier, and there's plenty of room for kids and all their gear. Go for a Titanium or ST-Line and it still looks pretty sharp - perfect for someone who needs the practicality but isn't quite ready to embrace full-on MPV life.

School-run win: Family-MPV practicality without looking like you're driving a people carrier.
