Here’s our rundown on the Renault Trafic, one of the best-selling commercials in Ireland year-on-year.

The cabin is designed to double as a mobile workspace. On applicable panel vans, the centre seat folds to form a surface for a laptop or tablet and incorporates an A4 document holder. Renault quotes 84 litres of in-cab storage, including door compartments and space beneath the passenger bench. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity are supported through the infotainment system, with three USB ports; wireless phone charging is optional.

Four equipment grades are offered: Start, Advance, Extra and Extra Sport. Start includes an eight-inch touchscreen with DAB radio, Bluetooth and USB ports, manual air conditioning, a 3.5-inch colour driver display, rear parking sensors and 16-inch steel wheels.

Advance adds a passenger bench with under-seat storage, a 4.2-inch driver display, a wide-view mirror, load-through bulkhead, additional exterior colour coding and full wheel trims. Extra brings electrically adjustable folding mirrors, front fog lights, 17-inch alloy wheels, navigation with smartphone mirroring and a reversing camera. Extra Sport adds automatic climate control, a hands-free keycard, fully body-coloured exterior trim and diamond-cut 17-inch wheels.

According to Euro NCAP, the Trafic gets a four-star safety rating: “The van comes equipped with most of the important ADAS features as standard, and these generally perform well.”

All versions are powered by ‘Blue dCi’ diesel engines. The 130hp and 150hp options are available with manual gearboxes, while selected 150hp versions and the 170hp engine use a nine-speed automatic transmission. Torque outputs are 330Nm, 350Nm and 380Nm respectively, making easy work of heavy loads.

An all-electric Trafic is due for launch imminently, which should mean much lower running costs, though the diesel engines are efficient.

Renault offers LCV service plans intended to fix servicing costs in advance, follow the manufacturer’s schedule and include a vehicle safety check.

The Renault Trafic comes with a five-year warranty: the first two years have unlimited mileage, while years three to five are limited to 150,000km. Service intervals are 40,000km or two years. Extended-warranty options are also available.

Due to its popularity, the Trafic holds its value relatively well in the used marketplace, if a little behind the leaders in that regard.
