Tips for driving in the rain

Driving in the rain is part of everyday life for Irish motorists, but wet weather can still create challenging and dangerous conditions. Whether you're a new driver or simply want to stay safer on the road, these essential tips will help you navigate rainy conditions with confidence.

1. Understanding Aquaplaning
Aquaplaning (or hydroplaning) happens when a layer of water builds up between your tyres and the road surface. This reduces traction and can cause you to lose control of the vehicle.
If your car begins to aquaplane:
•    Stay calm and avoid sudden movements.
•    Do not slam on the brakes.
•    Gently ease off the accelerator and keep the steering wheel straight.
•    Switch off cruise control.
•    Once the tyres regain grip, brake lightly to reduce speed.

2. Avoid Unnecessary Journeys
If Met Éireann is forecasting severe weather, avoid driving unless absolutely essential. Never attempt to drive through water if you’re unsure of its depth—doing so can cause engine damage or loss of control.
If you must drive through a flooded area, test and dry your brakes afterwards by gently pressing the brake pedal for a few kilometres.

3. Avoid Heavy Braking
Wet roads reduce your car’s reaction time. Instead of braking sharply:
•    Ease off the accelerator gradually.
•    Apply the brakes gently to avoid skidding.
Always test your brakes after driving through standing water.

4. Reduce Your Speed
Speeding is a major factor in wet weather collisions. Even if you’re within the posted limit, you should slow down further in heavy rain. Reduced visibility and longer stopping distances make high speeds extremely dangerous.

5. Driving Through Standing Water
When approaching pooled water:
•    Slow down and drive through at a steady pace.
•    Avoid creating a bow wave.
•    Never enter water if you’re unsure of the depth.
•    Test your brakes once you’re through.
Be mindful of pedestrians and cyclists who may be avoiding puddles.

6. Check and Use Your Windscreen Wipers
Wipers are essential for visibility. If they leave streaks or make scraping noises, replace them immediately. Good visibility is crucial in heavy rain.

7. Stay Updated on Weather Conditions
Before setting off, check the latest weather updates.

8. Maintain Proper Tyre Tread Depth
Tyres with good tread help prevent aquaplaning and improve grip on wet roads. The minimum legal tread depth in Ireland is 1.6mm, but more tread means better safety.

9. Increase Your Following Distance
Wet roads mean longer stopping distances. Leave extra space between your car and the vehicle ahead to give yourself more time to react.

10. Be Cautious Around Trucks and Buses
Larger vehicles create heavy spray that can instantly reduce your visibility. Keep a safe distance whenever possible.

11. Watch for Pedestrians
Rainy weather reduces visibility for everyone. Slow down near footpaths and avoid splashing pedestrians.

12. Be Prepared for Breakdowns
Breakdowns are more common in wet weather due to electrical and engine issues. If your car cuts out after driving through deep water, do not restart it—you could cause further damage.

13. Pull Over if Visibility Becomes Poor
If the rain becomes torrential and you’re struggling to see, pull over safely and wait for conditions to improve. Never continue driving if you can’t see the road clearly.

14. Use Your Lights Correctly
•    Headlights: Always use them in rain to improve visibility.
•    Fog lights: Only use them in very heavy rain. Turn them off once visibility improves to avoid dazzling other drivers.
