It really was nearly a win-win situation. But for some there will not be the pleasure of picking up a gleaming new motor for some time.

New cars are really scarce and it’s going to remain that way until the second half of the year by the looks of things. So what are you to do?

There isn’t much you can do except, in most cases, book your new car for the July registration period and look forward to that. In some cases there is every danger of having to wait until later in the year. Or even longer.

But if you decide you need something new before then that is available right now, make sure you size up the pros and cons of not buying the car you initially wanted.

Spending all that money of second-choice could hurt you in the long run.
