Farewell to the Fiesta (and the Galaxy and S-MAX) as EV drive takes over

Published on 29 October, 2022

Overview

I will be really sorry to see the Ford Fiesta go. More than 192,000 were sold here following its launch, so I am not alone in liking the little car.

It has always been at, or near, the top of the best drives in its supermini class.

I had some great fun in the higher performance versions down the years, but even the ‘ordinary’ models added a bit of sparkle to my journeys.

Now, as you probably know, the company will end production of the Fiesta in June.

It is also farewell to the large people carrier (MPV) Galaxy and its slightly smaller sibling, the S-MAX, as the brand makes way for a green wave of battery electric vehicles (BEVs).

After a slow start to get on board the electric drive, Ford is powering ahead to go all electric by 2030 (2035 including commercials).

The S-MAX and Galaxy were of their time: people wanted MPVs for their families. That was until SUVs came along. Their production ends in April.

As old names bite the dust, the company will bring seven new battery electric vehicles (BEVs) – three passenger, four commercial – to the market by 2024.

They expect to sell as many as 600,000 BEVs in the general European market by 2026.

While I am sorry to see the Fiesta, especially, depart the scene and the showrooms, I must admit I am already looking forward to what will come in their wake.

As you would expect on an occasion of sweeping change, the car maker is already promising the new generation of its electric cars will still be distinctly Ford.

I’ve no doubt they will, but I will still miss the Fiesta, and in particular the ST versions.

Mmmm – how those petrol engines burbled, begging to be driven.
