Overview

KIA did a double take here this week when they unveiled their new Ceed Sports Wagon (SW) and the updated popular Sportage.

The new SW (above) is as stylish an estate as I've seen or driven for a long time, especially with the 1-litre turbo petrol under the bonnet.

Hot on the heels of the recently-arrived Ceed 5dr hatch, it costs from €25,295. Pity we don't buy more estates here.

There's a fine, roomy cabin while boot capacity is up 72 litres (to 600). With the rear seats folded, the boot floor is totally flat, while there is an underfloor box to keep smaller items safe. There is also a bag hook to keep the groceries from spilling all over the place.

It's 20mm wider, 20mm lower and 115mm longer than the old model, but the wheelbase is the same.

I enjoyed my first drive in it on twisty Kildare roads. More anon after a longer test.

The 1.0 turbocharged petrol direct injection engine was a bit special. There will be a 1.6-litre diesel (€27,595).

Meanwhile, their revised big-selling Sportage is just going on sale.

The car has been given a lift outside and in with upgraded infotainment and active driver aids.

They claim the new EcoDynamics+ powertrain reduces CO2 emissions by up to 4pc under WLTP, while Idle Stop & Go is now standard.

Again, more anon after a lengthier test drive.
