Opel Kadett City Turns 50

This year marks 50 years since Opel introduced a game-changer in family motoring - the Opel Kadett City. Launched in 1975, it was Opel’s first hatchback and helped shape the future of compact cars for generations to come.

Built on the solid foundations of the Kadett C, which arrived in 1973, the Kadett City added a practical, versatile hatchback design to the line-up. It offered families and working drivers a compact car with a large boot, clever folding seats, and a sloping tailgate that could be opened with just a fingertip — a novelty at the time.

The City wasn’t just about practicality though. Sleek lines, large windows, and optional ATS alloy wheels gave it a sporty look, while engine options ranged from a modest 52hp 1.0-litre to a lively 75hp 1.6-litre S, capable of 0-100km/h in 13 seconds.

By 1979, the Kadett City and its rear-wheel drive platform made way for a new era of front-wheel drive with the Kadett D. But its legacy lives on, with the modern-day Opel Astra carrying forward the Kadett’s spirit of smart, practical, and stylish family cars.

Available today with petrol, diesel, hybrid, and full-electric options, the Astra continues Opel’s tradition of meeting drivers’ needs with clever design and everyday usability — just like the Kadett City did half a century ago.
