Overview

These are the first pictures of Opel's small SUV, the Crossland X.

The replacement for the much-loved Meriva MPV, the new Crossover will slot in below the recently-revised Mokka X. It is due here by the summer.

A larger SUV, called the Grandland X, which will be a rival for the likes of the new Skoda Kodiaq, is scheduled for late autumn/early winter.

Opel says the smaller Crossland X is a family-friendly urban vehicle, but claims it has more than enough comfort and power to cope with long distances too.

There is no denying it carries many of the Mokka X's styling cues, and the picture of the exterior certainly strengthens the impression of it following 'big brother' quite closely.

It is fair too, to speculate that the Crossland X will have the same sort of engine range that powers the larger sibling. That would mean 1.4-litre petrol and 1.6-litre diesels featuring prominently among the turbocharged 4cyl powerplants.

Again, we can expect 2WD and 4WD versions (to justify having the 'X' after the name). And there will be 6spd manual and automatic transmissions.

It's going to be a busy year for Opel as three variants of the new Insignia are due as well.
