The all-new Peugeot 508 will arrive in Ireland in late 2018. Those who have seen the radical new design are massively impressed.
Journalists at last week's launch in Monte Carlo -Somerset Maugham's "sunny place for shady people"- told of exemplary road-handling, new petrol and diesel engines, countless safety and technology features and a quantum leap in quality, part of the upmarket strategy.
Low and sleek, the svelte coupe silhouette is further sharpened thanks to frameless doors. With the lion centred on its radiator grille and the 508 logo on the nose of the bonnet, tribute is paid to acclaimed predecessors, the 504 and 504 coupe.
Spanning the rear end is a glossy black strip housing three-dimensional full LED rear lights. The back of the car also reveals a deftly-hidden tailgate, with a 487-litre boot.
Stepping into the new 508 is like entering another world. The eye is drawn to a spectacular instrument panel and latest i-Cockpit. The compact steering wheel, large touch-screen and customisable digital heads-up display unit are designed for maximum safety and control. Seven toggle switches give direct access to the main features.
Latest-generation driving aids available, depending on trim, include night-vision, (a first for the sector), collision risk alert and automatic emergency braking that detects pedestrians and cyclists day and night at up to 140kmh. There is also active lane departure warning, driver-attention warning, automatic headlight control, speed limit recognition and recommendation, road sign recognition, adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, active blind-spot monitoring, Visiopark 360-degree vision and full park assist.
