We get behind the wheel of Škoda’s new all-electric family SUV – the Elroq 85
The Škoda Elroq 85 is the brand’s latest fully electric SUV and sits just below the Enyaq in terms of size and price. Designed to offer families a practical, tech-filled EV experience with long range and trademark Škoda usability, the Elroq is off to a strong start. But how does it compare to other electric SUVs in this competitive space?
Despite being slightly smaller than the Karoq, the Elroq still delivers impressive practicality. The 470-litre boot is well-shaped and comes with Škoda’s trademark ‘Simply Clever’ features like shopping bag hooks and boot dividers — little things that make a big difference.
Rear seat space is generous, with three ISOFIX points (two in the back and one in the front passenger seat), and a completely flat floor makes middle-seat comfort much better than average.
Up front, the Elroq’s cabin is classic Škoda - simple, solid, and user-friendly. But don’t mistake simplicity for basic: the spec list is impressive. A massive 13-inch touchscreen paired with a 5.3-inch digital cockpit comes as standard, along with wireless Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and wireless phone charging.
Most models include just about everything you could ask for in a modern EV, with some seriously impressive optional features available including an augmented reality head-up display and even Remote Park Assist via the Škoda app.
Safety is covered with a full suite of driver assistance systems, including Travel Assist, Emergency Assist, and Lane Keep Assist.
The Elroq 85 is powered by a 210hp rear-mounted electric motor, good for a 0–100km/h time of 6.9 seconds. It’s not a sporty drive, but it is smooth, quiet, and reassuringly capable.
The rear-wheel drive setup offers a more balanced feel compared to front-wheel-drive rivals, and while handling is more about comfort than corners, it feels confident and composed at all speeds. Around town, it’s easy to park and steer, and on the motorway, it cruises quietly and efficiently.
The biggest draw here is the range: up to 560km WLTP on a single charge. While real-world figures will vary, that’s among the best in class for a car of this size and price — a key reason why many Irish buyers will likely opt for the 85 over the smaller battery versions (the Elroq 50 and Elroq 60, with up to 370km and 430km respectively).
It’s early days for the Elroq, but it builds on the solid foundation of the Enyaq and Škoda’s growing electric portfolio. With strong backing from the Volkswagen Group, long warranties, and an established service network, it should prove a safe and sensible electric choice for families making the switch.
