Harder to ignore than ever before

The Tesla Model 3 has always been one of the most talked-about electric cars on the market, but with prices now starting at around €36,500 with current government incentives it's becoming increasingly difficult to ignore. Throw in an impressive driving range, sports-car-like performance, plenty of practicality and more technology than you could possibly need, and there's a lot to like.
Of course, there are a few reasons why you might think twice about buying a Tesla, but putting those aside for a moment, just how good is the Model 3 as an everyday family car?

One of the biggest selling points of the Tesla Model 3 is its value for money. With prices starting at approximately €39,000, or around €36,500 when you factor in the available SEAI grant, it offers a seriously competitive package.
The entry-level Rear-Wheel Drive model boasts a claimed range of up to 534km on a single charge. As with most electric cars, real-world range will depend on factors like driving style, weather and motorway use, but there's more than enough here to comfortably manage most daily journeys.
Tesla's excellent Supercharger network is another major advantage, making longer trips around Ireland and beyond considerably easier. The car can plan charging stops into your journey too, taking much of the guesswork out of electric motoring.

Don't let the sensible family saloon appearance fool you. The Model 3 is surprisingly quick.
With approximately 286hp, the Rear-Wheel Drive version can accelerate from 0–100km/h in just 6.2 seconds. That's impressive performance for a car at this price point, and the instant response from the electric motor makes it feel particularly lively around town and when overtaking.
It also handles remarkably well. The low centre of gravity gives it a planted, sporty feel through corners, yet it remains comfortable enough for everyday driving.
It's a car that manages to be genuinely enjoyable to drive without sacrificing the refinement you'd expect from a family saloon.

Inside, the Model 3 takes a minimalist approach, with a clean dashboard dominated by a large 15-inch touchscreen. There are very few physical buttons, which gives the cabin a modern, uncluttered appearance, although it does take a little getting used to.</escape>
The panoramic glass roof helps create a bright and spacious feeling throughout the cabin, while the seats are comfortable and there's plenty of room for the family.
Practicality is another strong point. There's a generous 596-litre rear boot, along with an additional 88-litre front boot, or 'frunk', which is particularly handy for storing charging cables or smaller bags. Fold down the rear seats and total storage capacity increases to more than 1,600 litres.
Everyday comforts include heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, dual-zone climate control and personalised driver profiles, making it easy for different drivers to jump in and get comfortable.

If there's one area where Tesla really stands out, it's technology.
Almost everything is controlled through the central touchscreen, from navigation and climate settings to entertainment and vehicle functions.
There are two wireless phone chargers, three USB-C ports and plenty of useful features, including Dashcam and Sentry Mode, which uses the car's cameras to monitor activity around the vehicle when parked.
Dog Mode allows you to maintain a comfortable cabin temperature for pets while you're briefly away, while Camp Mode keeps the climate control and other functions running when you're spending time in the car.
And then there's the fun stuff.
Tesla Theater offers access to entertainment and streaming services, while Tesla Arcade lets you play games on the touchscreen. There are also light shows, novelty sound effects and, of course, the famous fart noises.
Are any of these features essential? Absolutely not. But they're great fun, particularly if you've got kids. In fact, they can make waiting around in the car feel like part of the entertainment rather than a chore.

The Model 3 also comes with an impressive range of safety technology.
Eight exterior cameras support various driver assistance and monitoring functions, while standard safety features include automatic emergency braking, forward collision warning, blind-spot monitoring and lane-departure avoidance.
Tesla's Autopilot system is also included, providing assisted steering and speed control under driver supervision, with additional assisted-driving features available depending on the package selected.

The Tesla Model 3 isn't perfect.
Our particular test car had a noticeable squeak coming from the front seat, and some of the interior materials don't feel quite as substantial as those found in the very best European rivals.
The heavy reliance on the touchscreen won't suit everyone either, particularly drivers who prefer traditional buttons and controls.
And while Tesla has made significant improvements to the Model 3 over the years, questions around build quality and interior finish haven't disappeared entirely.
That said, is the gap between Tesla and its premium European competitors really as big as some people suggest? We don't think so, particularly when you consider the price, performance, range and equipment on offer.

The Tesla Model 3 makes a very convincing case for itself.
It's quick, efficient, practical, packed with technology and surprisingly enjoyable to drive. It also happens to be a brilliant family car, with enough entertainment features to keep the kids happy and enough range to make everyday electric motoring feel effortless.
There are certainly more luxurious alternatives out there, but few offer quite the same combination of performance, technology and value for money.
And judging by how reluctant the kids were to hand back our test car, the Model 3 has clearly made a lasting impression.
Looking for a Tesla Model 3?
The good news is that you don't necessarily need to buy brand new. Ireland's used Tesla market is growing rapidly, with some Model 3 examples just a few years old now available for under €20,000.
