Overview

Guide to driving lessons in Ireland

Step 1: Pass the Driver Theory Test
Begin by studying the Rules of the Road and booking your theory test through the RSA website. The test costs around €45 and covers signs, rules, and driving theory.

Step 2: Apply for Your Learner Permit
Once you pass, apply for your learner permit. You must display L plates and be accompanied by a fully licensed driver.

Step 3: Choose a Driving School
Select an RSA-approved driving instructor (ADI). Check reviews, ask about lesson packages, and choose between manual or automatic transmission.

Step 4: Complete Your EDT Lessons
You’ll need to complete 12 Essential Driver Training (EDT) lessons with an ADI. These cover a wide range of real-life driving situations and skills.

Step 5: Practice Regularly
Practice often between lessons with a qualified driver. The more experience you get, the more confident you’ll become.

Step 6: Prepare for the Driving Test
When ready, book your driving test. Consider pre-test lessons to sharpen your skills and familiarise yourself with test routes.

Tips for Success
•    Stay positive
•    Listen to feedback
•    Understand your vehicle
•    Know the Rules of the Road
